“Branding guru Brian Collins was among those at the World Economic Forum two years ago who began incubating this idea. “The reason I joined INDEX: and AIGA to do this was to show how young designers can really tackle important social and ecological problems, and develop smart, workable, real-world solutions,” Collins said between sessions.”—Solutions for a Water-Deprived Planet | Designerati | Fast Company

“Taking on the characteristics of our present online habits, and riding a wave of rapid innovation in screens and microprocessors, books may soon become multimedia events. In this transformative model, the book industry could actually be well-positioned. Publishers could team with authors and multimedia producers to forge a new channel for dynamic e-books that go far beyond linear prose; they may provide a blend of text, video, audio interviews, 3-D maps – an entire ecosystem of content built on top of the book. For Twilight, the teen-vampire novel by Stephenie Meyer, the multimedia might consist of a video game within the book, mini bios of characters, maps, music, and discussion threads. An interactive element would allow readers to create their own stories, or even their own animated short movies, using the characters in the book. Inevitably, the experience would also include links to products based on the game: T-shirts, action figures, vampire toothbrushes. Suddenly, a book with mere words on a page seems so limited. And not just books. Magazines and newspapers too.”—Amazon Taps Its Inner Apple | Page 6 | Fast Company

“It’s a common complaint that the Web makes us more impatient, but most of us use it to track (or create) long-running stories and debates. I’ve been following the career of folk-rock star Roger McGuinn for more than 30 years, and now I use the Web for that. If anything, the essence of Web life is that we are impatient to discover the next installment in our planned programs of very patient long-term interest. That’s a kind of impatience we can be proud of, just as a mother might be impatient to receive a call from her teenage daughter away at college. It’s a sign of caring and commitment, not superficiality.”—One Lesson from the Crisis: It’s Time to Create Your Own Economy | Fast Company

“Then I phoned McAlinden Associates, a firm that coaches executives to communicate effectively. They told me to prepare more deliberately before meeting with Mr. Perfect. What are the three things I want to impart? (There’s no better way to squelch the frisson than to think about what I want to impart.) “Make explicit the links between the key messages in your one-minute pitch and the issues that matter to him right now,” EVP Douglas McAlinden said. “Your pitch then becomes a discussion of how an investment would help him solve a problem he cares about.””—How to Overcome Infatuation and Make the Hard Sell | Fast Company

GoDaddy & Google

I spent 3 hours this evening looking at potential clients. You can check out my first sample at www.twitter.com/NYTechSummit to get an idea of what the event pages would look like. After research, more news articles and opinions on twitter I decided to take the plunge with GoDaddy.

I’ve used GoDaddy in the past mainly for its cheap prices and relatively simple setup. I purchased 2 domain names for $15 using a discount code. I’m taking advantage of the free email addresses with each domain name to look more professional. Since I find the GoDaddy webmail to be a little cumbersome, I have all email forwarded to a gmail account- my prefered mail service.

I setup the free hosting sites tonight since they can take 8-72 hours to load. I’ll upgrade to paid hosting once I solidify my webpage and design to make sure I have all of the features I’ll need.

The ball is now rolling and I’m just opening up Photoshop to see if I can put together a logo myself. I’m not very well-versed in the program but there is no better program to learn.

“Confused? Think about it this way: a few years ago, just adding tradeshow dates and booth numbers to a companies website was a big deal. Now you have the means to update information from you and your entire tradeshow team and what they’re doing at a show in real time. Who cares, right? Well, you should when you consider how all of this adds to your overall online profile.”—http://www.tradeshowfeed.com/2009/03/25/twitter-storm-whats-that/

“The first carbon neutral spirit” - Does anyone care? Does getting tipsy on green alcohol make an impact on the people who consume it? It feels a little bit like greenwashing but I guess I’m in support of any product that treads lightly, pollutes less.
